Professor GianCarlo Moschini published articles in Journal of Agricultural & Food Industrial Organization and Environmental & Resource Economics.
In Journal of Agricultural & Food Industrial Organization 23(1), Moschini authored the article "Animal Welfare Ballot Initiatives and the Vote-Buy Gap" with Tomislav Vukina of North Carolina State University and Sohae Eve Oh of Jeonbuk National University. The article provides empirical evidence to explain the apparent discrepancy between consumption choices and voting outcomes for a recent high-profile animal welfare case: California’s ban of eggs produced with caged hens. Results show that the vote-buy gap depends on the egg price differential, and the distribution of consumers’ heterogeneous preference for animal welfare issues.
In Environmental & Resource Economics (88), Moschini authored "Emission Reduction by Voluntary Agreements: Oligopoly Market with Green Consumers" with Hyunseok Kim of Korea Development Institute. The article evaluates the performance of voluntary agreements, relative to a tax or subsidy policy, as a way to reduce environmental pollution in an oligopoly context and finds that a voluntary agreements can improve welfare despite suffering from free-riding behavior.
