Professor Chad Hart published an article in the most recent issue of Agricultural Systems. Hart authored "Economic and environmental performance of soybean-based cropping systems in the US Midwest" with Carolina Freitas, Mark Licht, Isaiah Hubber, Michael Castellano, Matt Helmers, Daniel Northrup, and Sotirios V. Archontoulis of Iowa State University, Joe McClure and Matt Herman of Iowa Soybean Association, and Patricio Grassini of University of Nebraska.
The article compares alternative new cropping systems (soybean-soybean, soybean-winter rye cover crop-soybean) with existing ones (maize-soybean, maize-maize) in terms of 1) productivity (grain yields and yield stability), 2) environmental (water, nitrogen and carbon dynamics); and 3) economic performance.
